I’m very strongly motivated by a desire to expand on my own personal boundaries of creativity, within an aesthetic acceptance of what fine art is. This is the cornerstone of my work; It’s the bedrock of the foundation of why I make art. The desire to expand on one’s creative boundaries often leads one into uncharted territory; a situation that requires navigation through intuition. This creative process of discovery through intuition is a fascinating process that I fully embrace. It plays a roll in all the categories of works that I produce - abstract, representational, or a combination of the two. For me, my work is an adventure into a world of discovery, innovation, and beauty.
My portfolio is diversified and my art is in constant change. Some of my abstracts are conceptual ideas that I express as a metaphor to life. Others are non-objective, meaning that the painting is simply a play on relationships of elements of art. My representational art and works with some representation in them are usually derived from my personal experience in nature. Most are produced through memory and intuition. In my youth, I spent a great amount of time in the wilderness where I felt a spiritual connection to nature. I often feel this connection in my painting.
The thing that I’m most interested in accomplishing in my work is to create an energized movement that gives life to an emotional feeling within a painting. The acclaimed Canadian painter, Emily Carr was once quoted as saying “ Movement is the essence of being.” I believe that a painting with qualities of movement within it will have a life of its own.
The mixed-media that I mostly employ are acrylic on canvas, oil on canvas, or a combination of the two. I have also used other mixed-media, such as acrylic spray, construction compound, concrete and ceramic tile on wood panel.
My formal training in fine art is from the University of Alberta and The University of British Columbia.

Randy Oliver’s studio is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He draws his inspiration from the human experience and how it relates to the perception and sharing of common values.
His visual language is the result of a translation of emotion through an encounter with the interrelationships of the elements of art. In the spirit of these translations of emotion he delivers a feeling of movement and excitement within his work. Oliver’s process is informed by the formal properties of painting in oils & acrylics, and he often incorporates other materials into the mix.
